Monique Van Willingh
YOLA at HOLA & Music Director
Originally from South Africa, Monique graduated with an Honors Postgraduate Degree in Classical Flute, with an Performance Bachelors Degree in Jazz Flute from the South African College of Music at University of Cape Town. Monique is a graduate of the Sistema Fellows Program at the New England Conservatory of Music, where she explored the Venezuelan El Sistema Program which uses music as a vehicle for social change. She then completed her Masters of Arts in Teaching Degree at Longy School of Music of Bard College which is situated on the HOLA campus. During her year in the MAT Program, Monique was inspired by the HOLA values, staff, leadership, students and families, and was happy to have the opportunity to return to the HOLA family as Music Director.
An accomplished musician, Monique has won several awards, including: the SAMRO Jazz Finalist SAMRO/Bonhams Award Winner, the ImpACT Award Winner and the Fine Music Radio/Pick ‘n Pay Winner. Monique was also the Principal Flutist and Original Composition Soloist for the MIAGI Youth Orchestra and the first flute player to be chosen for the National Youth Jazz Band. It was her time in the MIAGI Youth Orchestra that led Monique to search for avenues to join her two passions: music and youth development.
