All year long, HOLA introduces healthy cooking and living through weekly enrichment classes for elementary, middle and high school students as well as summer workshops for college students. In nutrition education classes led by HOLA’s Operations Director (an active professional chef), students embrace their cultural backgrounds, reworking traditional recipes for higher nutritional value and fewer calories using fresh ingredients that they frequently grow and harvest straight from HOLA’s on-site herb and vegetable garden.

In addition to developing healthy alternatives and mastering food preparation techniques, students also learn the importance of a balanced diet, knowing the nutritional contents of what they eat, and developing healthy eating habits. Weekly classes teach students how to shop and cook for themselves and their families, turning them into advocates for healthy choices.

Recognizing the importance of engaging whole families in wellness, HOLA also offers healthy cooking classes for parents. By partnering and collaborating with local organizations such as FEAST, LA Housing Partnership and LA Regional Food Bank, Sustainable Economic Enterprises of LA (SEE-LA), and others, HOLA is able to provide basic food essentials, weekly produce distribution, and offers a weekly sandwich table to all students.
