The newest class of 2019 Wings Scholars have been announced by Nike, awarding a full college scholarship to HOLA senior Ayannah Shabazz. Wings is the Jordan brand’s community impact platform, inspired by Michael Jordan’s legacy of greatness and commitment to education. Wings scholars aspire to attain the greatness that Jordan represents through the power of education and embodiment of the Wings brand core values: Greatness, Determination, Authenticity, and Freedom. HOLA is proud to be a community partner of the Wings initiative, with two Wings Scholars from 2018, Violaysia Smith and Harry "Adrian" Simmons.

As a Wings scholar, Ayannah and her family were invited to experience College Signing Day at UCLA on May 1, 2019. College Signing Day is a national celebration of high school seniors and transfer students, especially those from low-income, underrepresented and first-generation college-going backgrounds, who have committed to pursuing higher education — either at a community college, a four-year college or university, or a professional training program. Former first lady Michelle Obama and her college access and success initiative, Reach Higher, co-hosted the event with UCLA.

Ayannah is originally from Georgia and moved to California almost six years ago. She is the oldest of five and attends Santee Education Complex. She has maintained an honor roll status while playing basketball and running track. Her career goal is to become an educator.
