Program Mission: SmartStart provides elementary students with the FUNdamental building blocks necessary for academic advancement and personal growth.
Each year, HOLA's SmartStart program serves 50 boys and girls, ages 6-11. SmartStart provides academic and tutoring support, helping youth to develop solid reading, writing and study skills. The academic portion of the program is supplemented with a wide variety of enrichment activities that provide opportunities well beyond what students are exposed to during their regular school day. Enrichment activities include introduction to music and choir, visual and performing arts, physical education, science and technology, creative writing and learning centers.

Darlene is a graduate of California State University, Los Angeles, and holds a B.A. in Child Development. She has completed her Multiple Subjects Preliminary Teaching Credential and her Master's Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Phoenix. She has worked for the past eleven years in the Los Angeles Unified School District and the private sector.
Her educational experience and knowledge has motivated her in the decision to become a director, teacher, and mentor. She values and believes in offering students a safe learning environment where they are able to reach their fullest potential.
