Program Mission: Rites of Passage Encounter (ROPE) high school program prepares youth for post-secondary advancement by providing academic support, preparation for college, personal guidance and pathways to achieve their life goals.
ROPE strives to revitalize students' attitudes towards education, increase students' grade point averages, motivate students to pursue post-secondatry educational opportunities, increase respect for diversity, and promote self-empowerment. Each year over 100 high school students participate in college prep and SAT review classes, individual and group tutoring sessions, financial literacy classes and HOLA's Youth Leadership Council. In 2008, 23 ROPE seniors graduated from high school and all 23 of these students are going to college!

Rope Director
Jose has worked with a wide range of youth for several years in various settings. He was mentor, tutor, and teacher for the José Valdes Math Institute, a summer math program in San Jose. He has done volunteer work for a number of years working with youth, senior citizens, and college students. He previously worked for an outdoor education program, taking inner-city youth rock climbing, snowboarding, camping, and engaging the youth in various teambuilding activities. He graduated from California State University, Chico with a BA in Teacher Education/Physical Education. Currently, Jose is completing his MS at California State University, Los Angeles in Youth Development and Community Leadership.
