Las leyendas Del ring Art Exhibit
At
HOLA’s El Corazon Gallery
Heart of Los Angeles has organized its largest exhibition to date, Las Leyendas Del Ring, celebrating the worldwide phenomenon that Lucha Libre has become over the last four decades. Curated by Alex Nataren, Abraham Orozco, Maria Galicia, Javier Carrillo and Dan McCleary, the exhibit brings together the artwork of over 40 established artists from Mexico, Brazil, and the United States as well as student artists from HOLA and California State University, Long Beach.
The May 30th opening of Las Leyendas Del Ring drew over 250 visitors, attracting what HOLA student artist, Ana Baranda, termed “an eclectic mix of aficionados, art-makers and masked muses.” Los Chivos, Supernatural, Punky Boy and other prominent luchadores graced the opening with their arresting presence and passionate tales, while the gallery pulsed to the festive tempo of live music by Los Jonnaleros Del Norte. A touch of thematic spice and zest was added to the mix by the culinary artistry of CASA, downtown Los Angeles’ cocina y cantina.
Artist Pierre Picot who flew back from Paris to attend the opening reception, commented that “the real pleasure was meeting Los Chivos brothers. They were elegant and poised as representatives of a mythological sub-culture. What I loved about the art work was seeing the immediacy and enthusiasm of the work of the HOLA students.”
Actress, playwright and doctor of Chinese medicine, Sharon Barr described the opening as “an exuberant event,” and noted that “the thrill of actually meeting the luchadores was matched only by meeting the young artists, and to see their work hold it's own on the same walls as some of L.A.'s most accomplished painters!"
