In January, Los Angeles based artist Peter Alexander invited HOLA artists to visit his studio and take a guided tour of his space. On the tour, Peter explained the process of his art, what he was currently working on, and how he came to be an artist. At the end of the tour, Dan McCleary, HOLA's master arts instructor, invited Peter to be HOLA's second artist in residence (first being Dan McCleary). Peter immediately accepted the invitation and scheduled a project in HOLA's art studio from February 23 thru Feb 28. Mr. Alexander and his assistants HOLA alumni and artists, Javier Carrillo and Maria Galicia created a series of palm tree works of art which were printed through HOLA’s own El Corazon’s Printing Press.
Peter became so enthralled with the project that he stayed until March 9th creating over 40 prints. He purchased all of his own materials and donated 1/3 of what he produced to HOLA's Art Department. Peter made a positive lasting impression on everyone here at HOLA, but especially Javier and Maria who learned first hand how to make a living as an artist, use stencils when printing and new theories on color. We are most grateful to Peter and look forward to future Artists in Residence including international artist James Brown.
