In 1989 when we first opened up the old gymnasium at Immanuel Presbyterian Church here in Los Angeles, my sole intent was to provide the boys and girls living in this tough neighborhood a safe place to hang out. Little did I know that 19 years later, Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA) would be serving over 1,300 boys and girls with daily fine arts, athletics and educational programming. Back in the early days it was about survival; now it’s about building a future for each boy and girl that comes through HOLA’s front door. It’s about helping young people that deserve a shot at success acquire the education and skills to make their dreams come true.
HOLA’s success story is really the success story of everyone who has loved us and helped us grow. Hundreds of our boys and girls have been the first in their family to attend college, and for some of them, the first to graduate from high school. During these difficult times when our nation is faced with such overwhelming challenges, I am proud to be working with young people that want a better life; that want to contribute in a positive way to this country which has provided them with such immense opportunities; and that want a chance at the “American Dream.”
I value the love and support Heart of Los Angeles has received from so many over the past 19 years and thank you on behalf of all of HOLA’s boys and girls for providing them with hope for a brighter future.
Warmest regards,
