August was a busy month for most of our college bound freshman. Most of the students kept themselves occupied getting things ready for their big move either out of state or into a dorm. Those that decided to stay in Los Angeles were busy scheduling classes and preparing for their first semester as college students. This process involves a lot of nerves and goodbyes and many of the students were dealing with their first experience leaving home.
In an effort to make the process a little easier, So Cal CAN (our local extension of the College Access Network) hosted their second annual Connecting College Bound Freshman Event. As members of the So Cal CAN network, HOLA students had the opportunity to connect with a group of students from all over Southern California who would be attending the same colleges come fall. The workshop included a meet and greet and an opportunity for students to understand how important it is to create a “Team” of supporters throughout college. Those who attended were also lucky enough to get tickets to the “All You Can Eat” section at Dodger Stadium where we were able to eat all of the Dodger dogs, nachos, and popcorn we wanted. Although the Dodgers lost, the students left with some valuable information and connections that they will hopefully remember for many years to come.
